Sabbath vs. Sunday
a discussion between a Christian (of another denomination--their comments are highlighted) and this website
He quoted parts from the Catholic Catecism:
<my response>:
<from the first quote> "For Christians it has become the first of all days, the first of all feasts, the Lord's Day" This is "extra-Biblical" interpretation--the Bible (i.e. New Testament) doesn't explicitly state this or direct this....it is a "teaching of men" imposed on the Bible, not something specifically stated or directed in the Scripture. (This is the heart of Protestantist vs. Catholicism: Scripture vs. Extra-Biblical teachings, or the "inferences of men", even Church Fathers). We must go by the scripture (Acts 17:11, John 6:63, Acts 5:29)
2175 for Christians [Sunday] ceremonial observance replaces that of the sabbath. In Christ's Passover, Sunday fulfills the spiritual truth of the Jewish sabbath and announces man's eternal rest in God. This is a big example of what i stated above--this is man's teaching (or tradition); the Bible doesn't teach that Sunday replaces the Sabbath. Passover was a sign of Christ's Sacrifice, not of the Holy Day, as Passover in Egypt painted the blood on the doorpost (a symbol) and ate the lamb (Exodus 12:7-8)...it's even called the Passover in v.11. So Passover was never meant to replace or change the Holy Day--it was related to (a symbol of) Christ's sacrifice:
"For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us." (1 Corinthians 5:7)
Sunday fulfills the spiritual truth of the Jewish sabbath Again, that is not what God said, it was what man said.
2176 The celebration of Sunday observes the moral commandment inscribed by nature in the human heart to render to God an outward, visible, public, and regular worship "as a sign of his universal beneficence to all Again, they're just replacing Sabbath with Sunday. You could probably say those things about the Sabbath; these are nice things. Sabbath was a sign of sanctification (being made holy and for the Lord's holy use) [Exodus. 31:13, Ezekiel 20:12]
2176 [cont'd] Sunday worship fulfills the moral command of the Old Covenant, taking up its rhythm and spirit in the weekly celebration of the Creator and Redeemer of his people. That is totally not true; working on Sabbath (saturday) is a sin (Exodus 20:9-10), so that would be false worship, not fulfilling the Covenant.
2177 The Sunday celebration of the Lord's Day and his Eucharist ....in light of the apostolic tradition Yes, in light of TRADITION.
Sunday is a BEAUTIFUL SWITCH: "we're honoring God and His Resurrection! Our New Hope!, etc...." But that's not what God commanded, nor did He ever undo Creation (Genesis 2:1-3) or the 4th Commandment (Exodus 20:8-11)
